Makeup Declutter/Empties | Ep. 2

Hi Beauties,

How is isolating treating you? I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy during this strange and somewhat stressful time. I have been using my time wisely and have decided to cleanse my life of everything I have outgrown. That includes makeup! I have decluttered a TON of products so this is what I am going to share with you today, I have also thrown in some empties for good measure.

If you want to see my declutter process, check out my Instagram where I have been putting out IGTV’s showing you through my process! There is more to come and I know you won’t want to miss out on them 😉

First up we have the Sleek Contouring and Blush Palette. This has been in my collection for such a long time and I am sad to say that as my collection grew, I really neglected this product. I am not getting rid of this palette because I don’t like it or because it’s ‘bad’, I am simply getting rid of it because it is so old and needs to be thrown out!

Next is The Balm Put A Lid On It Eye Primer. Again, like most of the products mentioned in today’s post, this is one of those ones that I brought with good intentions but sadly just never used. It has been in my collection for a while now, I have maybe used it a handful of times and now it is too old to pass along to anyone else. Anybody else guilty of this?

Now we have the MAC Cosmetics Velvet Teddy Lipstick. I picked this up years ago through the ‘back to MAC’ program. This is where you take 6 (I think) empty MAC jars, foundation bottles or full-sized lipstick bullets into your MAC counter, and they swap you for a lipstick of your choice! It is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Anyway, I picked this up years ago! Loved it, used it a lot, and now it smells a little funky so I thought I better make room for something fresher!

Next up is the Tarte Cosmetics Shape Tape Concealer in the shade light natural. I am proud to say that this one is actually empty! I have been loving this concealer for a long time and I was determined to use it up so I could make way for some new goodies. This is the second tube of this full-coverage goodness that has had a workout in my makeup routine, and I can easily say it won’t be the last.

Up next is the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Liner in the shade stix and bones. I am so sad to say that I just couldn’t get myself to fall in love with this tube of glittery goodness. I have another shade of these liners that I really do love but I guess this shade just wasn’t for me.

Now we have the L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24hr-Matte Foundation in the shade 22 radiant beige. I did have WAY too many foundations in my collection before I did this declutter. Some I have had for years, others are newer to my collection. This one hasn’t been around for a long time because it was actually a repurchase of one I used years ago. Sadly, my skin just isn’t up for the matte foundations as much anymore. So this one needs to move along.

Now it’s time for the NYX Cosmetics White Eyeshadow Base. As you can tell from the photo, I haven’t gotten much use out of this. While it was good when I first purchased it because it was the only white base I had before I purchased the Plouise bases I just didn’t want to touch anything else! Bye friend.

Next is the Ulta3 Get Glossy Lip Gloss in the shade fierce fuchsia. I have said in previous posts that I am not much of a gloss wearer as I don’t like how my lips look and feel when I have a gloss on. When I was lucky enough to receive some glosses from the amazing Ulta3, my mind changed. This shade of pink, however, is not for me. I kept the other 2 they were kind enough to send me, but this one can move in with a friend.

I am sad to include my Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter in the shade into the blue. This one technically isn’t an empty product but I might include it in that category. Why do I say that? Because I had to get rid of it because it has dried out so badly that when you swatch it, literally nothing comes out! I haven’t had it for too long which is a bummer. I definitely loved it while I had it!

Next up is the Benefit Cosmetics The Pore Fessional Primer. This is another proud empty of mine! I love using the mini versions of this product because it is so easy to take with you everywhere you go. There is nothing worse than an over the top, large and bulky product. But the bad part about it being a mini is that you do tend to go through it quickly. I may repurchase this again in the future, but for now, I want to test out some new and different things.

Now we have the Maybelline Master Conceal Concealer in the shade fair. You may be able to tell that I have actually never opened this product! I had repurchased this a while back during a Priceline sale when I was using up another tube of this product. After I got rid of the last one I had good intentions to use this one up too. But I guess that never happened! Time to pass it along to a friend.

Next up is the Tarte Cosmetics Rainforest of the Sea Foundation in the shade fair-light sand. This foundation shade is a pale gals dream! I loved it from the moment I got my hands on it. Which was lucky because I actually purchased it online! It is a little old now and doesn’t smell the best so it was time to get rid of it. You may see her reappearing again in the future though.

Second last is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance Eye Primer. I purchased this because one of my favourite YouTube Beauty Gurus loved it. But I never really got into it. Sadly now it is old and expired so it has to go in the bin. Bye!

Last, but certainly not least is the MAC Cosmetics Diva Lipstick. This actually belonged to my sister before it made its way into my lipstick drawer. I honestly didn’t know how long she had owned it for before it came my way (gross?) but I decided to give it a chance. Now I when I look at it, I can tell it expired looooong ago!

Did you enjoy my makeup declutter? What have you decluttered or emptied lately? Make sure you leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

Makeup Inventory Template

Hi Beauties,

I have a quick, short little post for you all today! If you have been following my Instagram for a while, then you may have seen me mention my Makeup Inventory on my stories. If you haven’t, well let me show you!

First things first, what is a makeup inventory? I first saw my loves kimkroft and beauty_withlauren share their makeup inventories on their stories (I think Lauren may also have a whole highlights reel dedicated to hers so make sure you check it out). I was really intrigued about it. What they explained was that you can use a makeup inventory to hold lots of different types of information about your makeup collection. From the price of products, size, whether it is cruelty-free or not and even ingredients. Now, everyone’s makeup inventory will be different. I know mine is pretty basic compared to Kims (as she literally does data for work and well, I can’t match them skills babes), but it works for me.

I use my personal inventory to monitor purchases, decluttered items and empties, as well as my collection as a whole (obviously). I am not going to share the link to my own makeup inventory, as I base mine around the money I have spent on each product, and well that’s for me to know and for you to not worry about! However, I will share some screenshots of my own inventory, and I have created a google docs template for you to use and it will be linked at the bottom of this post!

Screen Shot 2020-02-01 at 4.47.43 pm

Firstly in my makeup inventory, I have my Overview page. This page literally just lists all my products by categories (foundation, concealer, mascara, etc.). I am able to then put the total number of each product next to the corresponding category. I update this every 4 months and this way I am able to see how much I have added or gotten rid of from my collection.

Screen Shot 2020-02-01 at 4.49.41 pm

The next page I use is the Inventory page. This is where I have almost all of these categories (I have separate pages for liquid lipsticks and eyeshadows). Here I list the name of the product, brand, whether it is cruelty-free, shade name, price, size, when I purchased it and when it expires. I love having all my makeup in a spreadsheet-like this as it lets me see what products I typically buy the most, and whether they are value for money or not.

Screen Shot 2020-02-01 at 4.51.12 pm

Next up I have my Eyeshadow Pans page and my Liquid Lipstick page. Now, I own a fair few liquid lipstick and eyeshadow palettes so they need their own separate space. I have each shade in each eyeshadow palette laid out for me, this way I can monitor what I use, what I like or don’t like and eventually, I want to have the dupes written in my little notes section.

Screen Shot 2020-02-01 at 4.51.56 pm

My New In, Empties and Declutter pages are all very similar. These ones are pretty straight forward too! For the New In page, I list any new products I receive or buy, and note how much they cost and when I got them. For the Empties page, I list the name, the price and whether I want to repurchase in the future or not. For my Declutter page, I note what the product is and why I am decluttering it.

Screen Shot 2020-02-01 at 4.52.52 pm

Last, I have my Skincare Inventory page. Again, I have this separated into different skincare categories such as face masks, serums, face oils and moisturizers. I love keeping an eye on my skincare also cause I know I don’t go sticking to a skincare routine, so this way I can keep notes on what I like and don’t like and I can also check what I already own so I don’t purchase any unnecessary skincare products.

Want to start your own Makeup Inventory but don’t know where to start? Use this link to access a little template I have made just for you! Enjoy!

Do you like the idea of having a Makeup Inventory? Do you think you would get some use out of one or do you think it is a waste of time? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

New Release | Ulta3 | Dark Summer Collection

Hi Beauties,

I am back at you again with a new post! I am really trying to get back into being more consistent with posting again, but it might take me some time as I have a lot of ideas going on in my head, and so little time to see them through!

Anyway, in today’s post, we are going to have a look at a brand new collection that was just released last week! I was lucky enough to be sent some of the new Ulta3 Dark Summer Collection to try out from the lovely Julia and the Ulta3 team.

The Dark Summer Collection is a stunningly warm and wearable collection with a fashionably dark twist, according to Ulta3. They believe that reflective and multi-dimensional tones are no stranger to the summer season, but this new collection features a striking addition to the traditional bronzed summer look we all know and love. This collection features dark plum shades, berry tones and a mix of metallics that will help elevate your look!

First up in the collection we have the Great Lengths Mascara, which comes in both a normal and waterproof edition. Ulta3 believes that if long and defined lashes are your thing, then this is your product! This mascara comes with a slimline silicone brush that ensures that even those small, difficult to reach lashes are coated. The formula is also infused with Vitamin E and Biotinoyl Tripeptide which helps to hydrate and strengthen lashes. I myself love a waterproof or water-resistant formula when it comes to mascaras as I have always had issues with transferring during the day from normal mascaras. The Great Lengths Mascara retails for only $9.95 AUD.

Next up we have the limited edition Master Metals Eyeshadows, which comes in three stunning metallic shades – Brass, Bronze and Copper. If you love making a statement with super reflective, creamy metallic eyeshadows than these might be the products for you! The high-intensity formula of these shadows means that a little product goes a really long way. The Master Metals Eyeshadow retails for $6.95 AUD each.

Next in this collection, we have the Longwear Matte Lip Cream, which comes in 3 shades – Fearless, Strike Out and Dark Dreams. I was lucky enough to receive the shade Strike Out which is a stunning deep red shade. I love a liquid lipstick so I am hoping that this will be no exception. My first impression of the formula is that it is very pigmented and has the potential to be a new favourite of mine! The Longwear Matte Lip Creams retail for $7.95 AUD each.

What good is having great eyeshadow, if you have no base to put it on? The next product in this collection is the All Night Long Eyeshadow Primer. Eyeshadow primers help to extend the wear and increase the intensity of any eyeshadow with just one simple step. I can’t wait to start using this, as I have just gotten into trying out different eyeshadow bases! The Ulta3 All Night Long Eyeshadow Primer retails for $6.95 AUD.

The Dark Summer Collection features not one, but TWO different mascara types. The second is the Loud and Proud Mascara, which also comes in a waterproof and normal formula. Ulta3 believes that if you love yourself some thick and voluminous lashes then this is the mascara for you. This product comes with a non-clumping, high-lift formula that ensures all lashes are completely coated and lifted. I am down to the last few uses of my current mascara, so I am beyond happy to test out this one soon! The Loud and Proud Mascara retails for $9.95 AUD.

Last, but certainly not least, we have some stunning limited edition nail polishes! There are three shades available – Thunder, Sangria and Evolve. I have really been loving my Ulta3 polishes so far. I do get my nails done by my trusty nail tech, but I tend to mix up the colours on my toes every now and then, and that’s how I have been testing them out. I am loving the look of both the shades I received (Sangria, a deep brown/red shade and Evolve, a metallic brown shade). However, I really am intrigued about the Thunder shade, so I might have to go pick it up myself. The Ulta3 Nail Polishes retail for only $2.95 AUD each!

This range is vegan and cruelty-free and is available to purchase now at selected pharmacies and online

*Disclaimer – all these products have been generously gifted to me, but all opinions are my own*

Have you tried any of the Dark Summer Collection from Ulta3? What products do you have your eyes on? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

Hi Beauties, and hello 2020!

As you may have noticed I have taken a little break over the last month or so just to focus on work and myself. But I am more than ready to get back into it and make the most of getting content ready whilst I am on holidays from work. If you have been following my blog for a while, then you might have seen some of my start of year posts from previous years. And this one will be no different! So let’s get into it.

2019 definitely wasn’t the best year of my life, but it wasn’t exactly the worst either. I started the year off by spending time in New Zealand with my family and I can honestly say it was the first Christmas/New Years I can remember that I actually felt so happy and really enjoyed myself.

The next big thing that happened in my life this last year focused around work. After two or so months of just working casually here and there, I was finally offered a more stable job. At first, it was only 3 days a week, but within 4 weeks I became full time. This has to be the best thing that has happened to me this year as it really helped me to find a purpose in life. The children I work with are amazing and I feel so happy to be able to help make a difference in their lives and their futures. I finally found a job that I was happy with and I was finally working with/for people who were supportive and caring. I have made so many new and amazing friends through this job and I am so excited to have a contract to go back again full time in 2020.

Last, but certainly not least, I finally got myself a baby. A dog baby! Everybody meet Mykie, he is my little bundle of energy and love. I had so many friends always tell me how much a pet can help with depression and anxiety, but after losing my childhood dog a few years ago I never thought I would be able to go through that again. In came Mykie and he was the best decision I have ever made for myself. Because of him, I am able to understand love, I feel needed and wanted and like I have a real purpose. He needs me to look after myself so that I can look after him in the best way possible. And it doesn’t hurt that he gives me so many cuddles every day.

Like always, I have some goals I would like to set for 2020. Not resolutions as such but just little milestones that I would like to aim towards, and if I don’t achieve them then that’s fine, there is always next year!

#1 – continue working on having a positive mindset. I have always struggled with remaining positive, especially when it comes to my own thoughts about myself, so 2020 is all for self-care and self-love. I have already started my 2020 Self Love Diary (you can find more details about this over on my Instagram).

#2 – make healthier choices. I feel like this will always be a goal for me as it is something that I always seem to fail, but that’s ok! I want to TRY to get out and exercise more, I want to TRY to eat healthier, but most importantly, I just want to TRY and make myself a healthier and happier person.

#3 – work on improving my photos and content for both Instagram and my Blog. These are two things I am really passionate about, so why not make it a goal of mine to work hard on it and see it through all the way to the end of the year.

#4 – save money up for a big holiday. My best friend and I have a goal for the end of 2020, but to achieve this I am going to have to try my hardest to save all the money I can. This means no more buying unnecessary things, finishing up the makeup products I already own and love, and not just purchasing new makeup because of the ‘hype’ around it. Low buy 2020, I am ready for you.

These goals may seem small, and they are definitely achievable. There is no point to making goals if you have no ideas, wants or even plans to achieve them. By working on these, my bigger life goals can be reached even quicker!

What are some of your goals for 2020? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

Makeup Declutter

Hi Beauties,

I have recently been updating my makeup inventory which has made me take a long hard look at all the makeup I have been hoarding over the past few years. I decided that now would be a great time to thoroughly declutter my collection and just keep the products that I love and use often. Due to this, I have decluttered a TON of products so this is what I am going to share with you today, I’ve thrown in some empties for good measure also. There is a whole lot to get through so let’s get straight into it!

*Side Note: you may notice that a lot of these photos have different backgrounds. This is because I started this declutter before I took a break from social media, and now that I am back I have made my own new background for my photos!*

Beauty Essentials Makeup Wipes – I absolutely love these makeup wipes for many reasons. They are only $2 from Priceline, they aren’t too harsh for my skin and they come in so many different styles. I picked up a whole bunch a while back while Priceline was having a half off sale so I have been slowly using them up. However, once I run out of these I will not be repurchasing as I am trying to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray – This is a staple setting spray in so many makeup lovers collections. I feel like I have had this product in my collection for such a long time so I had decided to make it part of my project pan this year. I am happy to say that I have finally used it all up, so now I can give some of my other setting sprays some love before I repurchase this one.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel – Another product which I had in my project pan for this year! I love this clear brow gel so much that I will definitely be repurchasing one day in the future. It holds those unruly brow hairs in place all day and doesn’t leave the brows feeling crusty and gross like some others do.

Benefit Cosmetics High Brow Glow & NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil – I have had these products in my collection for so long now and I honestly ever reach for them so I figured it was time to get rid of them!

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frosts – If you have been following my blog for a while you would remember that one of my first ever posts was about these products. I picked them up in a great sale and I let you know in that post that I was really disappointed with the quality of these products. I never reach for them, they don’t work well on my skin and it was time to say goodbye to them!

ColourPop Cosmetics Lippie Stix – This is another bunch of products I, for some reason, just never reached for. While I do love these shades they were also limited edition which means that you are no longer able to get your hands on some of the shades.

ColourPop Cosmetics Super Shock Cheek & Shadows – As much as I love ColourPop and their affordable products, these ones just aren’t for me anymore. I much prefer their pressed shadows to their super shock ones. I never reached for the blushes as I found them a little harder to use.

MAC Cosmetics Lipsticks – These technically belong to my sister but she gave me the big responsibility of looking after them for her when she didn’t have space for them in her collection anymore. After actually checking them out I had to break it to her that they had definitely expired a long time ago so it was time to bin them!

Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator Palette – I got my hands on this limited edition palette after I fell in love with it on BeautyBay. I had it in my collection for months and months and honestly never picked it up. Instead of wasting perfectly good product I thought it was time to pass it along.

Chanel Universal Bronzer – First of all, this ‘universal’ bronzer is not at all universal. I had tried so hard to love this product because I had saved up for it for so long and finally purchased it. But it just never looked good on my skin! It has now been rehomed to someone who can actually get some use out of it.

What products have you panned or decluttered recently? Am I getting rid of any of your favourite products? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

Clean Out Week | Part 3 | Project Pan Update

Hi Beauties!

Welcome back to another blog post. Today’s post is part 3 of 3 posts going up this week! First, I gave you a look into some products that I recently decluttered. Then, we had a look at a few empty products I have used up over the last month. Today, I will give you a little project pan update.

Let’s get into it

First up, the products that have been successfully panned!

The Stila One Step Correct Serum was the first product to be used up since the introduction of my project pan journey. I had included this one because it was almost empty anyway and I knew it would be seriously satisfying to use up a product so soon after starting this little challenge. I have loved this primer for when my skin was feeling super dehydrated and uneven.

The Face of Australia Blush in the shade Primrose was the next to go. Even though there is still a bit of product left in the pan, I figured it was time to say goodbye because I have been finding it hard to get an even amount on my brush with the giant hole in the product.

I have also used up all of my Covergirl mascara. As I said in my Project Pan intro, I have been through so many of these mascaras since my teenage years. It will always be a favourite of mine, but it is time to use something new.

Next up, I want to share some new products that have been added into my project pan challenge!

The Sephora Blurring Primer is now being added into my project pan because again, it is almost empty so I should hopefully be able to use it all up pretty soon. I don’t love or hate this product but I have been paying particular attention to my waste lately. So instead of just getting rid of it, I thought I would use up the last little bit then bid it farewell.

I have also added the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in the shade Feisty into the project pan collection. I have loved this blush for some time now, and I am sad to admit that its use-by date is fast approaching. So I figured I would get as much use out of it as I can before it needs to go in the bin.

Lastly, I have added in the Benefit Roller Lash mascara. Again, I am sad to admit that its use-by date is coming up, and it is a mascara that I really love. So I want to use up as much as I can in the next couple of months before it needs to go in the bin.

Have you seen my Project Pan introduction? What products are in your Project Pan? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

That’s all for now Beauties!

Clean Out Week | Part 2 | Empties

Hi Beauties!

Welcome back to another blog post. I hope you are enjoying the posts I have been putting up for you guys!

Today’s post is part 2 of 3 posts going up this week! First, I gave you a look into some products that I recently decluttered. Today, we will look at a few empty products I have used up over the last month (and I will let you know if I plan on repurchasing them). And lastly, I will give you a little project pan update.

Let’s get into some empties!

Tatcha – The Water Cream has quickly become my new favourite moisturizer. I love it so much that I have had to hide my newly repurchased (spoiler alert) one so that I use up some other moisturizers I have in my collection. I love this product because it leaves my skin feeling super hydrated and smooth for such a long time. It doesn’t just soak into my skin and disappear. Like I said, I have already repurchased this one!

Maybelline – I have been trying to get back into doing eyeliner with some of the makeup looks I have created lately, which is why this one is empty! I love using this as a base/outline for my liner and then going over the top/filling in the line with a liquid liner. At this stage, I don’t know if I will repurchase this one again.

L’Oreal Paris – I have had the Lumi Magique Highlighter in my collection for some time and I was wondering when it would run out. I have been using this more recently as an eyeshadow base and I really loved how it performed. I won’t be repurchasing this product however, simply because I have so many concealers open at the moment, I don’t need to add any more!

Makeup Revolution – I feel like everyone in the beauty community has mentioned the Conceal & Define Concealer at some point within the last year or so. I loved mine to death and I am so happy that I grabbed 3 shades because I have gone through them so quickly! I have one of the shades left and now that they are being stocked at Priceline for us Aussie beauties, I will be running and grabbing the super-sized product asap.

Beauty Essentials – if you didn’t know, Priceline stocks this really amazing and affordable skincare brands. I grabbed a bunch of their makeup remover wipes when Priceline had one of their amazing skincare sales and I have fallen in love. I have used up the Sensitive and Micellar ones and I have already repurchased some other flavours (if you will) to try out. Did I mention they are only $2?!

MAC Cosmetics – I have gone through so many bottles of this brush cleanser so you can be sure that I really do love this product. It cleans/disinfects your brushes so well and also dries super quickly which would be great for you makeup artist beauties. I did go to repurchase this but it was out of stock so I grabbed another brand, but I will definitely pick this up again in the future.

Garnier – everyone loves a bit of micellar water am I right? I love using this for cleaning up eyeshadow/winged liner, for removing makeup for a cut crease or for an extra step in my makeup removing process. It is such a great all rounder! I have already repurchased a super big size of this so hopefully, I shouldn’t run out anytime soon.

Bioderma – this Make-up Removing Micelle Solution was a favourite of mine for such a long time. It works great as a makeup remover on its own, or as an added step in the makeup removing process. It leaves my skin feeling super clean which is what you want in a makeup remover. I will repurchase this one in the future, but for right now I am testing out some other similar products.

Have you tried any of these products? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

That’s all for now Beauties

Clean Out Week | Part 1 | Declutter

Hi Beauties!

Welcome back to another blog post. I hope you are enjoying the posts I have been putting up for you guys!

Today’s post is part 1 of 3 posts going up this week! First I am going to run through a bunch of old/expired makeup that I have decided to remove from my collection (and I will let you know if I will be repurchasing them). Then we will look at a few empty products I have used up over the last month. And lastly, I will give you a little project pan update.

Let’s get into some decluttering!

Mellow Cosmetics – these matte lipsticks in the shades New York, Chocolate and Post have been in my collection for a little too long now so it is time to say goodbye. I did love these so it might be something I consider repurchasing in the future.

Chi Chi Cosmetics – I loved these lipstick shades back in the day (Game on, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Checkin In and Sex Bomb) however they are way beyond expired now so it is time to let them go! I won’t be repurchasing these ones.

Stila – I received this as a mini sample with a purchase a while back now, I really loved it but unfortunately, it has gone all clumpy and yuck. I might repurchase this once I get through some other mascara in my collection.

MAC Cosmetics – I feel like everyone and their dogs were loving the Soft Ochre paint pot back in the day however, I find this product too thick for my eyes. Again, I won’t be repurchasing this and I will be passing this along to friends or family.

Too Faced – I am sad to be letting this go because the shade is so pretty, but for whatever reason, I just never reach for it and it would be expired by now. I won’t be repurchasing this one.

ColourPop Cosmetics – this collab with Shayla was one of my favorites however, I really hate glossy lips on myself, so this one will be passed along to someone who will love this product! Obviously, I won’t be repurchasing this one.

Iconic London – these pigment sticks were the first ever stick foundations I tried, and for a little while I really enjoyed them. I have had them for far too long now so its time for them to move to the bin. I won’t be repurchasing these ones as my skin no longer loves this formula.

ColourPop Cosmetics, Milani & Australis – to be honest, I regret purchasing these! Not because they are bad or anything, because they are actually great products. I really just don’t use lip liner and have never really gotten the hang of it. I had kept all of these in hopes that I could teach myself to be better with lining my lips, but I never really touched them and now they are a few years old. Cya!

Did I declutter any of your favourites? What are some products that you have decluttered recently? Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Hi Beauties,

One of the most important part of any beauty routine is the regular cleaning of makeup brushes. This is super important for a number of reasons; it prevents acne or the spreading of spots, killing germs and bacteria build up which can cause infections, you will get better colour pay off, maintaining the softness of your brush head and can help in ensuring that your brushes last a super long time.

What Can I Use To Clean My Makeup Brushes?

There are so many ways that you can clean your makeup brushes. You can use products like baby shampoo, oil-based cleansers, alcohol spray, rubbing alcohol, coconut oil or even olive oil, just to name a few.

It is important to note that not all products work the same. Oil based cleansers will clean your brushes of any excess products but won’t always kill all the bacteria. Where as alcohol based products will kill the bacteria but won’t necessarily remove all the excess product from the brushes. This is why I always spot clean brushes with an oil based cleanser to get all the excess product out so I can continue using a clean brush and then deep clean with alcohol based products to kill all the bacteria.

My most used products are the Xo Beauty Solid Brush Cleaner, the Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner and the MAC Cosmetics Brush Cleaner.

How Often Should I Clean My Makeup Brushes?

Face brushes can be deep cleaned once a month (at the very least) while brushes used around the eye area (blending, liner or shadow brushes) should be cleaned more regularly. I know that may seem like a lot of work for some people, and trust me I know how annoying cleaning brushes can be, but there are little things you can do in between washes to make sure the brushes are clean and performing at their very best.

Every single time I do a makeup look that uses eye brushes, I give them a quick spot clean when I am finished using them. This means I take a small amount of Mac Brush Cleaner, or the Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner (oil based products) on a bit of paper towel and swirl my dirty brush in it until the colour comes out of the brush. I find that this helps them to not only be clean and hygienic, but I am also able to continue using that brush instantly and it can last a little longer before I need to fully deep clean it.

How Do I Deep Clean My Makeup Brushes?

Step 1: Grab all your dirty brushes, your cleanser and a clean towel and set yourself up near a sink.

Step 2: Wet the bristles of the brush with lukewarm water (important- make sure it’s not too hot otherwise it might melt the glue which holds the bristles to the brush).

Step 3: Swirl your wet brush in whatever soap/cleanser you have chosen to use.

Step 4: Gently massage the bristles in your balm so that the soap really gets deep into the dirty brush.

Step 5: Throughly rinse out the bristles. Repeat steps 3-5 until the water runs clear from the brush

Step 6: Using your clean towel, squeeze out any excess moisture from the brush.

Step 7: Reshape the brush head and place it on the towel to dry over night (important- try to refrain from holding or sitting your brushes upright as you don’t want any water to get into the glue in the ferrule, this can cause shedding and your brush will not last as long as it usually would).

That’s it! Easy right?! I have included two short videos of me washing my makeup brushes for you to check out. Enjoy!
